At the time of its opening, GhostRider was advertised as the longest wooden roller coaster on the West Coast of the United States. During a preview event on the roller coaster's opening day, one hundred members of nonprofit group American Coaster Enthusiasts rode GhostRider. Jack Falfas, the general manager of Knott's, had advocated for an accelerated opening date. GhostRider was originally scheduled to open in early 1999, but it opened on December 8, 1998, ahead of schedule. Labor union members protested outside Knott's Berry Farm in April 1998 over the fact that the park did not hire unionized workers to build GhostRider, prompting the park to file a lawsuit to stop the protests. As a result, the ride's height was revised from 112 to 118 ft (34 to 36 m) so it would be taller than Colossus. Hall said that park officials wanted the ride to be taller than Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain, which Hall had also designed. Ĭonstruction of the ride itself took 11 months. By March 1998, the ride was being referred to as "Ghost Rider". Cedar Fair's CEO Dick Kinzel briefly considered canceling the ride because of its high cost, but Cedar Fair ultimately continued to develop the new coaster. At the time, land was still being cleared for the new ride. The ride would be the Knott family's last investment in the park, as Cedar Fair acquired Knott's Berry Farm in October 1997. The first phase of the project involved clearing land and relocating the warehouses, which took about a year and comprised much of the ride's budget. Ĭustom Coasters International (CCI) was hired to manufacture the coaster, while Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters (PTC) provided the trains. Knott's vice president for maintenance and construction at the time, Robin Hall, said he wanted the project to serve as a "billboard" for the park on Beach Boulevard, along the park's eastern boundary the project would also allow Knott's to relocate warehouses in the attraction's path. It would replace the Pan for Gold attraction and a decorative volcano built by the park's founder, Walter Knott. The ride would cross over Grand Avenue, which separated the main section of the park from one of its parking lot, and would occupy a portion of that parking lot. The ride would be the park's fifth roller coaster, as well as the first attraction to be built in Knott's Ghost Town section since 1969. ![]() The expansion project would cost an estimated $35 million, of which the coaster cost $24 million. Development Ī new wooden coaster was announced in August 1997 as part of an expansion of Knott's Berry Farm. Knott's officials hoped that the construction of a wooden coaster would increase the park's annual attendance to 4 million. The Knott family had begun planning for a wooden coaster almost five years before GhostRider was ultimately completed in 1998. According to historian Eric Lynxwile, who wrote a book about Knott's Berry Farm, a wooden roller coaster was the only major attraction type that was absent from the park. Knott's already had several major attractions, including the Calico Mine Ride, a prototype Corkscrew coaster, a looping shuttle roller coaster named Montezooma's Revenge, and a water ride named Bigfoot Rapids. ![]() Amusement Today 's annual Golden Ticket Awards has consistently ranked GhostRider among the world's top wooden roller coasters.īy 1997, the Knott family, which operated Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in Buena Park, California, planned to add a wooden roller coaster to the park. Between 20, Great Coasters International conducted a major renovation of the ride, replacing the track and the trains. After it opened, GhostRider became one of Knott's most popular rides. The coaster cost $24 million and opened on December 8, 1998, earlier than originally scheduled. ![]() GhostRider was announced in August 1997 as part of an expansion of Knott's Berry Farm. There are three trains, each themed to a different precious metal, though only two are in use at any given time. The ride follows an L-shaped double out and back pattern, with a station themed to a mining building. Manufactured by Custom Coasters International, GhostRider is the tallest and longest wooden coaster on the West Coast of the United States, measuring 4,533 feet (1,382 m) long and 118 feet (36 m) tall. It is located in the Ghost Town section of the park, south of the main entrance. Machining requires precautions, because the material can gall unless sharp tools and proper cooling methods are used. Titanium is not as hard as some grades of heat-treated steel it is non-magnetic and a poor conductor of heat and electricity. However, titanium loses strength when heated above 430 ☌ (806 ☏). Certain titanium alloys (e.g., Beta C) achieve tensile strengths of over 1,400 MPa (200,000 psi). Titanium is 60% denser than aluminium, but more than twice as strong as the most commonly used 6061-T6 aluminium alloy. Ĭommercially pure (99.2% pure) grades of titanium have ultimate tensile strength of about 434 MPa (63,000 psi), equal to that of common, low-grade steel alloys, but are less dense. Titanium is superconducting when cooled below its critical temperature of 0.49 K. It is paramagnetic and has fairly low electrical and thermal conductivity compared to other metals. The relatively high melting point (1,668 ☌ or 3,034 ☏) makes it useful as a refractory metal. It is a strong metal with low density that is quite ductile (especially in an oxygen-free environment), lustrous, and metallic-white in color. Characteristics Physical propertiesĪs a metal, titanium is recognized for its high strength-to-weight ratio. There are two allotropic forms and five naturally occurring isotopes of this element, 46Ti through 50Ti, with 48Ti being the most abundant (73.8%). In its unalloyed condition, titanium is as strong as some steels, but less dense. The two most useful properties of the metal are corrosion resistance and strength-to-density ratio, the highest of any metallic element. Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminium, vanadium, and molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong, lightweight alloys for aerospace ( jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft), military, industrial processes (chemicals and petrochemicals, desalination plants, pulp, and paper), automotive, agriculture (farming), medical prostheses, orthopedic implants, dental and endodontic instruments and files, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones, and other applications. Other compounds include titanium tetrachloride (TiCl 4), a component of smoke screens and catalysts and titanium trichloride (TiCl 3), which is used as a catalyst in the production of polypropylene. The most common compound, titanium dioxide, is a popular photocatalyst and is used in the manufacture of white pigments. The metal is extracted from its principal mineral ores by the Kroll and Hunter processes. The element occurs within a number of minerals, principally rutile and ilmenite, which are widely distributed in the Earth's crust and lithosphere it is found in almost all living things, as well as bodies of water, rocks, and soils. Titanium was discovered in Cornwall, Great Britain, by William Gregor in 1791 and was named by Martin Heinrich Klaproth after the Titans of Greek mythology. Found in nature only as an oxide, it can be reduced to produce a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density, and high strength, resistant to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine. Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. 11/22/2023 0 Comments Spooky chocolate eyeballs![]() Sift the cocoa powder and flour into a bowl and then mix thoroughly into the batter in 3 batches alternating with the buttermilk until you are left with a smooth mix. ![]() Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Last but not least, candy eyeballs are the mix-in that makes these cookies perfect for Halloween. I like to use bittersweet chocolate chips but you can add whatever you like best to your monster eye cookies. These super chocolate-y cookies are made even better with the addition of chocolate chips. I like to use whole milk, but you could absolutely substitute with skim milk, oat milk or other non-dairy alternatives. You’ll only need 2 tbsp of milk for this recipe, but it’s an important part. Don’t skip this ingredient! SaltĪ touch of salt in a sweet treat brings out the sugary sweetness and makes these cookies taste even better. Baking Sodaīaking soda is used in cookies to give them a chewy texture. You could even opt for dark chocolate cocoa powder if you’re feeling really spooky. Unsweetened cocoa powder gives these monster eyeball cookies their deep chocolate flavor and dark, spooky color. Whatever brand you have in your pantry will work! Cocoa Powder This recipe uses basic all-purpose flour. It might seem silly to add vanilla to a chocolate cookie, but a touch of vanilla extract really brings the chocolate flavor come alive in these cookies (and any chocolate treat!). While a cold egg certainly won’t make or break your cookies, room temperature eggs can lead to fluffier cookies. I recommend letting your egg come to room temperature before adding to your dough. Because brown sugar is hygroscopic (that’s a very fancy term that basically means it will absorb liquid in the dough), using brown sugar in addition to white sugar creates a more dense, moist cookie. This recipe uses both white granulated sugar and brown sugar, adding a slight caramel flavor to the cookie dough. In cookies, butter and sugar work together to add structure and rise to a cookie for the perfect, chewy bite. Butter gives flavor and softness for baked goods. You probably already have most of the ingredients for these Halloween cookies in your pantry – they’re that easy! Butterīutter is always a must for any cookie recipe. 11/22/2023 0 Comments York mint patties![]() York Peppermint Pattie was invented in the year 1940. Institutional memory is much easier to maintain when a single individual can hold it for thousands of years. If Diana returns to a point too far in the future, by the time she gets back they might lose track of what they’re waiting for and why. That was a dig at the witches, who can’t afford to be as patient. As a vampire, he’s got all the time in the world to wait. Once they realize that Diana and Matthew have timewalked to the past to hide while searching for Ashmole 782, Gerbert decides that they’ll wait for the fugitives’ inevitable return to the present/future. I hate that Peter and Gerbert are corrupting her. Satu has the potential to be a great witch. What he has is many more years of training to hone his intense ambition and desire. I think these two instances show that Satu has much more innate power and better instincts than Peter. Last season, Satu also felt that Diana was spellbound when she examined her, while Peter missed it when he examined Diana as a child. I don’t think he senses it the way she does. Satu asks if Peter can feel the power in Diana’s spell, but he doesn’t directly answer her. Meanwhile, Peter stands off to the side, assigning his own motivations to the missing couple. Though Knox always presents himself as the leader and magical expert, it’s Satu and Gerbert who closely examine evidence Diana and Matthew left behind, then quickly solve the case. Now, they’re examining the remnants of Diana’s magic, trying to figure how she and Matthew escaped. At the end of S1, Gerbert (Trevor Eve), Satu (Malin Buska) and Peter Knox (Owen Teale) were breaking into the house, ready to capture and torture Diana the same way witches did with her parents. ![]() We open in the room where we left off, minutes after Diana (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew (Matthew Goode) timewalked out of the old Bishop house in upstate NY on Halloween night. If you haven’t read the book, I’ll just leave you to wonder about the unfamiliar names for now. Besides having Diana and Matthew’s timewalk to Elizabethan England to enjoy this season, at long last we’ll meet daemon playwright Christopher Marlowe (Tom Hughes), James Purefoy as Matthew’s father Philippe, Steven Cree as Gallowglass, Sheila Hancock as Goody Alsop, Adelle Leonce as Phoebe Taylor and Barbara Marten as Queen Elizabeth I.
